João Luís Ferreira received an MArch from the Faculty of Architecture of the Technical University of Lisbon in 1988.

Shortly after graduation, he became involved in philosophy, and since then has published multiple essays and texts, collaborating in critical journals such as Leonardo (1988–1989) or Bárbara (1997), also acting in the latter as editor-in-chief.

Between 2007 and 2012 he served as a member of the editorial board of Babel publishing house and served as a member of various political and cultural think tanks.

In 2009 he served as jury president of Arquitectar (Architectural Sustainability Award) and in 2014 as President of the Jury of the National Architecture Award (Secil). Within the partnership, in addition to managing the head-office, he has been involved in large-scale and highly complex mixed-use urban projects. In 2011, together with a large multidisciplinary team, he spearheaded the master plan for the southern expansion of the city of Maputo, capital of Mozambique, which is now successfully under phased implementation.

He is currently working as an editor of the collected writings of Portuguese philosopher Orlando Vitorino.
