Orascom Desert Houses

El Gouna, Egypt

2023–2022

Located in the Egyptian desert
near the Red Sea, a net zero,
fully sustainable house
built in rammed earth and hempcrete

The house revolves around the idea of walled volumes forming courtyards within a jagged geometry.
This has been devised as an oasis, a protective shelter from the wind and desert dust.  The house is essentially a minimalist structure wherein the only volumes that strike out are the barrel and half barrel vaults on the living room spaces. The spaces collide and form irregular courtyards with strategic openings to the outside, —in the swimming pool, for instances—, while preserving privacy from the outside.
