Paulo Martins Barata received an MArch from the Faculty of Architecture of the Technical University Lisbon in 1988, an MBA from the University of Edinburgh in 1991, a PhD from ETH Zurich in 2000, and was Fulbright Visiting Scholar at Columbia University in New York.

He has published extensively on architectural theory and criticism, among others, in Arquitectura Viva, Lotus International, Prototypo, Architecture Research Quarterly and in Daidalos, in the latter serving also as member of the editorial board. He was Cass Gilbert Visiting Faculty at the University of Minnesota, visiting critic at the University of Texas at Austin and Northeastern University, and, more recently, guest critic at USI Accademia di architettura Mendrisio, in Switzerland.

He co-curated the Prototypo Seminar in Architecture, held under the auspices of Porto 2001, European Capital of Culture. In addition, he was curator of the seminar Hard Lead, under the auspices of the 2004 National Year of Architecture, and served as President of the Jury of the National Architecture Award (Secil) 2004 (Universities), and in 2006 as jury member for the National Award of Bulgaria. In 2010 he co-curated the international seminar of the Lisbon Architecture Triennial.  

Between 2005 and 2010 he served as a member of the National Board of the Portuguese Order of Architects. In Graz, in 2003, Dr Martins Barata was appointed a member of the ECP (European Cultural Parliament), in which he served until 2011. He is currently working on an essay for the forthcoming catalogue Aldo Rossi: The Architecture and Art of the Analogous City (Princeton, 2023).

João Luís Ferreira

João Luís Ferreira received an MArch from the Faculty of Architecture of the Technical University of Lisbon in 1988.

Shortly after graduation, he became involved in philosophy, and since then has published multiple essays and texts, collaborating in critical journals such as Leonardo (1988–1989) or Bárbara (1997), also acting in the latter as editor-in-chief.

Between 2007 and 2012 he served as a member of the editorial board of Babel publishing house and served as a member of various political and cultural think tanks.

In 2009 he served as jury president of Arquitectar (Architectural Sustainability Award) and in 2014 as President of the Jury of the National Architecture Award (Secil). Within the partnership, in addition to managing the head-office, he has been involved in large-scale and highly complex mixed-use urban projects. In 2011, together with a large multidisciplinary team, he spearheaded the master plan for the southern expansion of the city of Maputo, capital of Mozambique, which is now successfully under phased implementation.

He is currently working as an editor of the collected writings of Portuguese philosopher Orlando Vitorino.

Paulo Perloiro

Paulo Perloiro received an MArch from the Faculty of Architecture of the Technical University of Lisbon in 1988.

Between 1987 and 1990 he worked in the property division of Sonae Sierra, involved in searching for investment opportunities and assisting the management team in setting up feasibility studies for major acquisitions.

Since then he has focused on retail design and has been involved in numerous large-scale projects. In this capacity, he has truly become a leading authority in the field.

As an expert in retail design, he has lectured extensively worldwide at universities, corporations and professional institutes, advising leading clients and investors in the development of evolving retail design concepts, moving on to complex mixed-use programmes that require a holistic understanding of the various components.

In the past decade he has been based in Qatar and worked extensively in the Middle East, namely in Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, in addition to India, Russia, Malaysia and Vietnam.

He is currently working on a design-and-build commission for the largest mixed-use ensemble in Pakistan, in the city of Lahore.

Pedro Appleton

Pedro Appleton received an MArch from the Faculty of Architecture of the Technical University of Lisbon in 1993 and an MSc in Building Heritage and Conservation from the Portuguese Institute of Technology (IST) of the University of Lisbon.

He collaborated in various design offices before joining the practice. He has also worked in cinema production and amateur theatre, and in recent years has become increasingly involved in research and development on universal design and special needs’ design. In this capacity, he has lectured and served on various bodies and juries as an expert for the Portuguese Association of Brain Palsy (APCL).

Within the partnership, he has focused on design sustainability and environmental design strategies, in addition to the design of aquariums, botanical gardens and nature-driven projects, realising, amongst others, the internationally acclaimed Mora River Aquarium.

As part of his interests, he has also worked and researched extensively on education facilities and on implementing pedagogical strategies through design.

João Perloiro

João Perloiro received an MArch from the Faculty of Architecture of the Technical University of Lisbon in 1987.

Between 1983 and 1989 he worked in the architecture practice of the late João Bento d’Almeida, first as an apprentice and later as project director, largely dedicated to cultural projects such as museum renovations and exhibitions, most notably the Gallery of Paintings of King Dom Luís in the National Palace of Ajuda.

Shortly after, in 1991, he served as an associate architect working on hospitality design for the Japanese conglomerate AOKI Corporation.

Within the partnership, João Perloiro heads the Interior Design division, working closely with the architecture teams to ensure comprehensive and interconnected across-the-board design.

He also handles complex hospitality projects, often involving sensitive heritage issues.

In an effort to develop an increasingly holistic vision, he has cultivated an in-house product design practice, with multiple pieces of furniture and objects fabricated and customised for specific projects.

Over the past 30 years he has also been actively involved in relief projects for various humanitarian and charitable institutions.
